A Guide to Placing - Sections, States, and Nationals
Advice from LOHS FBLA – 1st in Section, 2nd in State
Understand the Types of FBLA Competitive Events
FBLA offers a wide variety of competitive events, each designed to test different skill sets. It's important to understand which category your event falls into and how to best prepare for it:
- Objective Tests: These are multiple-choice tests on topics like Accounting, Business Law, and Marketing. You can practice for these events using resources available on our website, such as practice questions.
- Production Events: For these events, you’ll be tasked with completing tasks in software applications such as Word Processing, Spreadsheet, or Database. Preparation should involve practicing with the software and completing past event tasks.
- Role-Play Events: In these events, you will be given a scenario and asked to present a solution. Preparation involves reviewing case studies and practicing public speaking skills to simulate a real-world business environment.
- Speaking Events: Events like Public Speaking or Impromptu Speaking require you to deliver speeches on given topics. Effective preparation includes practicing delivery, timing, and structuring your speech for clarity and impact.
Top Tips to Succeed in Your Event
To succeed in FBLA competitions, thorough preparation is key. Here are some resources and strategies to help you perform your best:
- Study the Competencies: FBLA provides a list of competencies for each event that outlines the knowledge areas you’ll be tested on. Reviewing these can help you focus your studying on the most important topics.
- Use Textbooks: Many FBLA events align with standard business textbooks. These can be a great resource to deepen your understanding of complex topics.
- Practice, Practice, Practice: Use the practice questions on our website to prepare for objective test events. For production events, practice using the relevant software to become more efficient.
